NICSS Duty Of Care

When NICSS supplies interpreting services for children both NICSS and NICSS interpreters follow these rules:

  • A child is any person under the age of 18 years
  • NICSS and NICSS interpreters are not responsible or liable for what the professional service provider says
  • NICSS interpreters should not be considered to be "accompanying" a child to any appointment. The interpreter's role is to be a communication facilitator for each person at the appointment.
  • Responsibility for the child's safety and wellbeing before, during and after an appointment lies with the child's primary care giver and professional service provider.
  • NICSS will process a booking for a child sign language user where the request is received from a professional service provider or their staff.
  • NICSS will assume that the professional service provider in conjunction with the child's parent or guardian will make the decision about proceeding with the appointment and will advise NICSS if the appointment does not go ahead.
  • NICSS requests date of birth details for all sign language users.
